Breast Reconstruction

Mastectomy for breast cancer is a traumatic experience for any woman. Breast reconstruction following mastectomy is an option for women providing their health is good and that the reconstructive method doesn't interfere with their cancer treatment and surveillance. The best results are achieved with women who are non-smokers and close to their ideal body weight.

There are two basic methods for reconstructing breasts; prosthetic implants or transferring your own tissue. The availability of "donor" tissue, a history of radiation therapy, and whether one or two breasts require reconstruction are important determinants as to which method is used. Similarly, the type and stage of cancer, the complexity of the reconstruction, and the preferences of the patient determine the timing of breast reconstruction.

During a plastic surgery consultation, your surgeon will discuss with you the various methods of reconstruction available to you as well as the risks and benefits of each method.
